A copy of famous artwork was ruined beyond recognition during a repair job, in a case that could change the laws covering restoration work in Spain.
An anonymous art collector hired a furniture restorer to clean a copy of “La Inmaculada Concepción de Los Venerables,” a renowned work by Baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Europa Press reported.
But the results were ‘draw’-dropping – and not in a good way.
The happy face of the Virgin Mary returned as a misshapen lump, with blotchy red lips and crooked eyes, after two attempts to restore it to its original state. The job costs around $ 1,350.
The grim restoration made comparisons to the infamous “Ecce Homo” flop of 2012.
In that case, an amateur art restorer in the small town of Borja, Spain, turned her attention to a fresco of Jesus Christ called “Ecce Homo”, painted in 1930 by Elías García Martínez.
But his “fix” made Jesus’ face completely unrecognizable, becoming a worldwide laughingstock and making comparisons to a fuzzy potato and a monkey.
Now, conservation experts in Spain are calling for a tightening of the laws covering restoration work.
Fernando Carrera, a professor at the Galician School for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, told The Guardian that he believes that restoration should be left to professionals.
“We have to make sure that the people who do this kind of work have been trained in it,” Carrera said.
Can you imagine anyone who is allowed to operate with other people? Or someone who is allowed to sell medications without a pharmacist’s license? Or someone who is not allowed an architect to build a building? “
María Borja, vice president of the Valencia chapter of the Professional Association of Conservative Restorers of Spain, said that although social networks have drawn attention to a couple of cases, restoration works in poor condition may be more common than the people know.
“There are a multitude of situations where the works are operated by untrained people … possibly causing irreversible change,” he told Europa Press.
