Joe Biden appears to be adopting Senator Bernie Sanders’ progressive education policies, calling for more debt relief and a free college education.
Speaking of the protests that have spread across the country over the death of George Floyd, the former vice president has changed in much the same way as the country did in his wake.
“Well, you know, things are beginning to change and people are realizing it, and I have changed. I have. I think there should be more debt forgiveness for college loans, I think, more opportunities to go to college for free. For free, “Biden told Trevor Noah during an interview Wednesday on the” Daily Show. “
But the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate said corporate policy also needs to change, and criticized President Trump’s $ 2 billion tax cut.
“Imagine if we had to cut taxes by $ 2 trillion,” he said, adding that it could have been used to educate people.
“We are going to use that to reduce student debt. We would be a different country. Leadership matters,” said Biden.
He had previously supported making college tuition free for most students, except those whose families earn $ 125,000 or more a year.
Sanders, who abandoned the presidential race in April and endorsed Biden, has encouraged his campaign to find common ground on many of the progressive policies he proposed during the campaign.
Adopting those policies would go a long way toward uniting the Democratic Party and encouraging Sanders supporters to go to the polls in November.
In an interview published Tuesday with The New Yorker magazine, Sanders said he believes Biden is moving further to the left.
“I think they will see it pretty strong regarding the need for a new economy in the United States that represents working families much better than what we have today,” Sanders said. “You have told me you want to be as strong as possible in terms of climate change, and I look forward to hearing your proposals.”
Biden did not elaborate on the appearance of the “Daily Show” about the enrollment policy and host Noah did not press the question.
A request for clarification of Biden’s campaign was not immediately returned.
