A New Jersey man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death with a kitchen knife, leaving his 5-year-old daughter wandering outside his home while he was leaving with the couple’s two children, according to reports.
Jeffrey Daniels, 36, faces charges of murder, guns and child danger after the body of Michelle Burns was discovered Tuesday in her garden apartment in Dumont, according to NJ.com.
Police received a call to 911 around 12:20 a.m. from a neighbor who reported seeing the Burns boy walking alone in the courtyard of Knickerbocker Road, Bergen County District Attorney Mark Musella said.
“Officers entered Ms. Burns’s department to carry out a wellness check and found her dead,” the prosecutor said in a statement, the news outlet reported. “They had stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife.”
A short time later, police placed Daniels about 4 miles away in Closter, where he showed up at a residence with his young children, 18 months and 6 months.
The boy and baby were screened in a hospital and were uninjured, according to authorities.
Nicole Boccellari, Burns’ older sister who lives in the same apartment building, said she was home when a neighbor called to tell her that Daniels had knocked on her door to ask for a ride, NorthJersey.com reported.
She said the neighbor did not open because she was scared.
“As she walked to the next apartment to knock on her door, she noticed that she had no pants, just a jacket and a baby,” Boccellari told the media.
The neighbor soon saw the 5-year-old girl walking outside and called the police.
“I was calling and yelling her name at the department and knocking on the door, and my neighbor was banging on the windows, and we got no response,” Boccellari said of her frantic attempts to communicate with her sister.
Boccellari said there was a history of arguing and fighting between the couple, adding that her sister never filed a restraining order because she feared Burns would kill her.
“It was never a good relationship, it was never a safe relationship,” he told NorthJersey.com.
“She always took care of me, she was very protective of me. She wanted to be a mother to me. Protect me, guide me, make me feel better ”, added Boccellari.
